What a cute little town is Prince Rupert! We spent 3days at Prudhomme Provincial campground so we could take 3 day trips there.

The Sunken Garden, maintained by volunteers |
We arrived early for the Canada Day celebrations. Mariners’ Park was bedecked with tents and a stage, food vendors and kid activities including a bounce house and yard-sized checkers and Jenga. Live music and dance entertained the crowds hourly, from um-pah bands to folk; from Chinese dragon dances to Native American dances. The highlight for Judd was getting his pic with the Royal Canadian police in dress uniform. To Judd’s dismay, they are no longer mounted—even on a Segway. I had my photo op with the guys on duty.
A goodwill ambassador was giving out noisemaker toys to kids and adults alike. This is such a blended culture we couldn’t tell if the toys, or for that matter families, were traditional Chinese or traditional First Nation, a combo of both, just called Canadian at this time which is nice. The day included massive birthday cakes for Canada and a Canadian trivia quiz. The local scout troop graded our collective quiz. We asked how we did and the Scout said, “you got the majority right and the majority wrong.” We said we were visitors and didn’t do Canadian math. In a way she was right—without tallying, it looked like we had about 10 X’s out of 20.

Low tide at Cow Bay |
Judd tries a pale ale wherever we imbibe. I try the local white wine. Kazu Mura is a beer and a boat. A mariner from Japan was lost at sea. Years later, his boat the Kazu Mura washed up in Prince Rupert. Come to find out he was from PR’s sister city, Owase, Japan. The fishing vessel was restored and is memorial to Kazukio Sakamoto, on display at Mariner’s Park. Judd likes old boats.
Lost some pics in translation—ie periods of no cell service....will post if we get to the library... but here’s what we got for now.
