July 1-2 BC to AK

Yesterday we awoke to no crows. : ) and “NO Maggie!” Maggie is the camp neighbor bull dog who came snuffling by the day before on her walk with her dog sitter boy. She was trying to make mischief and her boy was trying valiantly to make her behave, loudly and ineffectually.

I finished the Judd-recommended book, Tip of the Iceberg by Mark Adams. It was a fun, informational account of touring around Alaska so splendid timing. We’ll send it along to the next sojourner this way.

Our afternoon sight to see was the North Pacific Cannery Museum. We caught up, 10 min late, for the guided tour which was well worth it. The guide recounted a fascinating history of the evolution of packing salmon in cans, mostly for the English/European market. Labor involved segregated areas for Japanese, Chinese and First Nation people of all ages, mostly working for old Victorian owners.judd was enamored with all the old technology and the guide bragged that he was allowed to get many of the old engines churning again.

After a late lunch in town, we were overwhelmed with the Canadian generosity of our camp friends—they’d been crabbing and brought over platters of fresh caught/cooked salmon and halibut and 2.5 Dungeness crabs. We had spent a pretty penny yesterday for “half a crab” at a restaurant plus $3.50 (Canadian) for a dipping pot of melted garlic butter. We feasted like royalty.
Judd thinks he almost prefers crab to lobster and he thinks his tattoo, if he gets one, might be a crab. I told him I have a sharpie marker and I’d help him out.

Our evening chore was to repair Sheldon with Bota Box “Bandaids” and packing tape. He’s a little tired from being folded and unfolded for so many photo ops and sleep overs.

Monday July 1 was Canada Day. We were checked out of the campground and grabbing early parking in town for the local festivities which lasted all day. We spent all day in town before boarding our ferry about 11pm. Woke up in Alaska. Tell you all about it later if we figure out how to
phone blog this while we have cell service.
